Organisation
AOF is a study association of affiliated organisations each with their own individual members. The association was established in 1931. In addition to the head office in Oslo, AOF has 19 local branches nationwide.

AOF's 35 affiliates comprise the national trade unions as well as other political, social and cultural organisations within the Norwegian labour movement and society at large.

AOF aims to be the leading provider of adult education programmes for the world of work.

AOF uses an educational approach based on learning by doing, always taking into
account individual needs and backgrounds. Active participation in the learning process is encouraged through the use of interactive teaching methods.

AOF aims to develop its affiliates' strengths and values.

AOF seeks, through its activities, to promote gender and cultural equality and to
further equal opportunities for all to take part in adult education activities. It also seeks to prepare individual members to take an active part in work and society as a whole.

AOF is the labour movement's cultural organisation.

AOF is an approved study association, as stipulated in the Act on Adult Education.
Activity
In 2007 AOF registered 42,854 participants on 3,540 courses (totalling 163,387 teaching hours) that were approved for state subsidies. In addition to these a number of in-company training activities, health and safety courses etc. were carried out which were not eligible for state funding.
Finances
AOF has three main sources of finance: state subsidies for adult education based on the number of teaching hours carried out, trade union funds for union representative training and participant fees. In addition, AOF has income from annual membership subscriptions and certain local government support both at county and district level.
